Right now, our biggest focus is on bringing forward a bill to the Alaska State Legislature that would protect student voice and ensure student representatives are included on all major school boards across the state. This legislation is aimed at restoring student representation, ensuring that young people have a direct role in the decisions that affect their education and future. We believe that student voices are vital in shaping policies that impact their lives, and this bill seeks to safeguard their right to be heard in every major school district in Alaska.
We are actively supporting HB21, a bill that would allow 16-year-olds to preregister to vote, replacing the current rule that only permits preregistration 90 days before turning 18. This change aims to give young future voters more time to engage with the electoral process, helping them become more informed and confident when they cast their first vote. By allowing earlier preregistration, new 18-year-old voters would have been able to follow elections and political developments over a longer period, encouraging higher voter turnout and fostering thoughtful, well-informed participation at the ballot box.
